What you are looking at
From the front yard, the new roof sits above pale, mottled brick, brick arches over the windows and white louvered shutters with rounded tops. Under an overcast sky the shingles read as a deep charcoal against the white gutter.
Up close, Rustic Black mixes charcoal, slate gray and near-black tabs with dark shadow lines between them. Titan XT is an architectural shingle, made of two bonded layers, and that is where the depth comes from. From the roof, one slope runs down to the gutter with a lower wing of the house and palm tops past it.
A narrow skylight in a bronze frame sits below two hips, and the courses run past it on both sides. The bundles stacked by the house were labeled Titan XT in Rustic Black, and the cap bundles Hip & Ridge HST in the same color.
The brick chimney stands where two slopes meet. Stepped metal flashing, weathered to a rusty red, wraps its base, and a valley runs downhill from it. A valley is the inside corner between two roof planes. Water from both slopes drains through it, so it is one of the first places a roof leaks if the shingles there are not cut and lapped well.
Around the back, a black hooded vent and a slim pipe vent come up through the slope above the brick wall. The last frame looks down past two more vents to a white screen cage over the pool, then a lake dotted with floating plants and an old wooden dock.
