What you are looking at
Virginia Slate is a gray blend with charcoal and silver tones mixed through it. Under the overcast sky in these photos they look like weathered stone from the yard, and up close the tabs range from pale to dark in no set order.
A ridge vent runs the full length of the main ridge, covered with cap shingles. In the hip end photo, its dark vented edges show along both sides of the cap as the ridge reaches the hips.
The most careful detail is where a lower roof meets a taller stucco gable wall. The shingles run right up to the base of the wall, the joint is covered where the two meet, and white metal trim finishes the gable edge above. Curved hip caps climb the slope beside it, and a few pine needles had already landed on the new shingles.
The back slope is long and fairly low. Three pipe vents rise through it in a loose line toward the ridge, with a taller white vent pipe near the top.
A big live oak leans over the fence at the hip end, and several of its limbs show fresh cuts. A cabbage palm grows up through its branches, and tall pines, a wood privacy fence and a metal shed fill the view past the yard, all photographed on a gray late September afternoon.
Under deep shade, a roof stays damp longer after a summer rain, and a ridge vent keeps air moving through the attic below.
