What you are looking at

The first photo looks down the roof from a hip end. Hip caps climb from the corners to where the ridge begins, and a raised row of caps runs on along the peak. That row is a ridge vent, a low channel under the caps that lets hot attic air out at the top. A white exhaust vent and a black pipe vent sit beside it.

In late July sun the shingle reads as a brown-gray blend. Up close the tabs mix tan, taupe, rose brown and slate gray, scattered evenly across the long slope in the second photo.

Hip and ridge caps are the folded shingles that cover the joint where two slopes meet. One frame looks along the ridge to a hip end, where two lines of hip caps split off toward the corners. Another shows a hip running up into the ridge, each cap lapped over the one below, with a smooth, dark low-slope section beside it.

A lower hip roof ties into the main slope, its caps carried up over the joint. In shade it looks blue-gray, and the sunlit slope above looks tan. It is the same shingle.

Out back, the block walls are painted sage green with white window trim. Pale, unpainted fascia boards along the back wing's eave show where wood was replaced. Fascia is the trim board at the roof edge. A wood privacy fence closes the yard.

Up close the shingles are an architectural blend, brown and gray, with a darker shadow line under each course.
