What you are looking at

From the front lawn, the new roof is a dark band above white fascia. The hip end drops toward a side yard fenced in black chain link, with tall oaks behind it.

Up close the color has more range than it shows from the yard. In bright September sun, the rear slope reads as a mottled mix of charcoal and slate gray. A skylight is set partway up, with a hood vent near the ridge.

The close view of the skylight shows the shingle courses cut and fitted to its tan metal frame on all four sides. Flashing is the formed metal that turns water around an opening like this one.

Along the main ridge, a raised row of cap shingles runs the length of the peak, with a dark vent edge on each side. That is a ridge vent, a low channel under the caps that lets hot attic air out at the top of the roof.

Over the brick paver patio, the shingles stop at a low-slope section with a smooth gray surface. Shingles need enough pitch to shed water, so a nearly flat area like this one gets a continuous sheet instead.

Behind the house, a chain-link fence crosses a wide mowed field, with a white storage shed and a blue tank along it. The shingle line and color come from the TAMKO bundles stacked on the roof during the job, labeled Titan XT and Rustic Black.
