From the ground (do this first)
- Walk the property after a dry stretch. Look for shingles that look lifted, cracked, or missing from the curb.
- Check ceilings and attic hatches for new stains. Fresh water marks matter more than old ones that have not changed.
- Look at valleys, chimneys, and skylights. Those details fail first in wind-driven rain.
- Stay off the roof. Photos from the ground and from a second-story window are enough for a first pass.
What to document after a storm
- Date, time, and which rooms showed water.
- Photos of the exterior elevation and any debris in the yard.
- A short note on whether the issue started during the storm or was already there.
- Keep that packet. It helps your insurer and your contractor tell wear from storm damage.
