What you are looking at

All five photos were taken late in the day. Photos two and three show a pale yellow sky behind the trees, and photos one and five show a blue afternoon sky with thin cloud. In that light the Rustic Black tabs range from deep charcoal to a lighter gray, so each slope looks mottled up close and settles into a near-black from a distance.

A hip roof slopes down to the eaves on all four sides, with no flat gable wall at either end. Here, cap shingles follow each hip line from the eave up to the short ridge, each cap lapped over the one below it, and the lines stay straight all the way up.

One close photo looks at the end of the ridge, where the hips meet it. The ridge caps there sit on a ridge vent, a raised strip with small openings that lets warm attic air out along the peak.

On the back slope, a curved black exhaust vent and a small metal pipe vent come up through the shingles. A lower roof section joins the main roof on one side, and the shingle courses turn into the valley where the two meet.

Toward the back of the house, the shingle rows run long and straight down the slope to the eave. Tall oaks crowd the back of the lot, and a neighbor's roofline shows through the trees.

A Central Florida summer means hard sun and afternoon downpours, and attic airflow and well lapped caps are what any roof leans on in that weather.
